It has been shown there are many benefits to gardening, whether it be an herb, vegetable, or ornamental garden, being outside and working with the earth is one of the best things one can do to increase overall wellbeing, improve mental health, and help the environment.
Gardening improves health and well-being. Exercise from the rewarding physical activity of gardening increases mobility, balance, and core strength. The exposure to fresh air and sunlight, even for 20 minutes a day, helps the body rejuvenate and increases vitamin D synthesis.
Gardening can lift your mood. Not only does it beautify your outdoor living space but there is a micro-organism bacterium in soil that activates the production of serotonin in the brain and this boost of serotonin acts as a natural anti-depressant. Touching the earth can reset your nervous system by grounding. Grounding is the process of taking in the earth’s negative magnetic field to help regulate bodily functions.
In addition to the physical and mental attributes that gardening provides, it also helps by attracting beneficial insects, bees, butterflies, and birds which increase the overall ecology of your outdoor living space. Even if you only grow your own herbs, it will help reduce your carbon footprint and that is therapy to my ears.
